Introduction Why the foreign SMS FAQ? The Master System has always been one of my favorite video game systems. I've had a complete Master System collection for years and have finished probably 3/4 of the titles. So, when I found out there were games that weren't released over here, needless to say, I was interested! I started searching for information and found a few sites on the Web that had some information, but really, information of the foreign variety was extremely hard to come by. So, I started compiling bits and pieces of information and met a few cool foreign guys that also had interests in the system and this is the results! And to those who say "SC-3000 and SG-1000 aren't SMS related", I say they are. But, just for you, I've placed them in their own little section. Note: I have no desire to compete with Jeff Bogumil's awesome SMS FAQ, so I am trying to stick with relevant Foreign information wherever possible! Note 2: Join the SMS mailing list by writing a note with the words "subscribe" in the title to: "smslist-list-request@segasages.com" II. The Systems A. The SG-1000: The first system that Sega released (1983, approximately), available in Japan and China. It runs on a 4mbit processor with 64k ram and can play 2 musical instruments at once. It came packed with ???????. B. The SC-3000: Sega's second system. I know this system was released in Japan, Australia and China, otherwise I know nothing about it! Any information would be appreciated! Want to play the SC-3000 games on a non SC-3000 system? Well, they work with *some* Telegames Personal Arcade systems! I've heard stories that Telegames ruined some of the cart ports on purpose, but have nothing to substantiate that, and they work fine on my TPA! C. The Mark 3: Released in ????, this is the first version of the Master System. It has the same system specs as the Master System with a different design. The system is molded in white, and has the cart slot and card slot on the right hand side. It uses the same power supply, controllers and A/V cables as the American Master System. The controllers (which remind me of the first SMS controllers, with the screw on joysticks) fit neatly on each side of the unit in molded holding places and are molded in the same color as the unit. In addition to the regular means of playing (RF/AV), this unit had a peripheral that allowed you to play via remote control! See more on the peripheral below. D. The Master System: Information on the Master System is available in the regular SMS FAQ. I've included it here because it may have been released in foreign areas with different pack-ins. Master System pack-ins include: Alex Kidd: Miracle World, Astro Warrior/Safari Hunt (Gun pack), Hang-On/Astro Warrior (No Gun pack), Marksman Shooting/Trap Shooting/Safari Hunt (Gun pack), Missile Defense 3-D (SegaScope system) Rambo (Gun pack) E. The Master System 2: Information on the Master System 2 is available in the regular SMS FAQ. I've included it here because it was released in foreign areas with different pack-ins. MS2 pack-ins include: Alex Kidd in Miracle World Sonic the Hedgehog Alex Kidd in Miracle World & Sonic the Hedgehog Lion King F. The Master System 3: The newest version of the Master System, released in Brazil only is about the same size as the MS2. The system is molded in Black and has come packaged with 2 games, Alex Kidd in Miracle World and Sonic the Hedgehog. This is the only version of the Master System that is currently sold in the world! MS3 pack-ins include: Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Sonic the Hedgehog G. The MS Super Compact: Released in Brazil only, this version of the Master System is slightly larger than the Game Gear. In addition to it's smaller size, this version allowed remote control play in addition to play via an RF Switchbox! The remote control broadcasts on channel 12 or 13. The MS Super Compact came packed with several different titles: 1. A game for girls entitled Monica no Castelo do Dragao (a Brazilian cartoon character). This game, I have been told is Wonderboy in Monsterland with a girl lead character! In addition, a boy's version of this game was made. 2. Sonic The Hedgehog 3. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (packed in the system's Rom area) 4. Alex Kidd in Miracle World 5. A soccer game (special pack for the World Cup) In addition, the version of the MS Super Compact with #1 above was molded in PINK! III. Title list Key: A = America Au = Australia (Ozisoft) B = Brazil (Tec Toy) C = Canada (Sega of Canada) E = Europe (Sega of Europe) EC = Europe "Classics" version. Game Incompatibilities So far, everything I've gotten from foreign lands has worked fine, with the exception of the following title(s): New Zealand Story. This title comes up with garbled graphics on both the SMS 1 and SMS 2. I've heard a rumor that it works with the Power Base Converter (attached, of course to the Genesis), so I need to try that and see if it works. VII. Where can you get the games? You might try writing to some of the people in my help list… You may find more than you bargained for! :) Telegames UK also has a selection of foreign Master System games.
